Pahang boast ‘twin towers’ at the back as Goulon reunites with Wague

-

PETALING JAYA: When FrenchLebanese defender Mamadou Wague was linked to Pahang, Herold Goulon was the happiest guy in the world.

And when the Elephants confirmed the appointment three weeks ago, it meant Goulon will be reunited with his close friend.

Both of them played in Le Mans from 2009 to 2010 and since then have kept in touch regularly.

The 32-year-old Goulon cannot wait to rekindle their partnership.

“Yes, I was maybe the happiest guy in the world when I heard that Mamadou was coming. He is a guy I have known for 12 years now,” said Goulon, who have played for English sides Blackburn and Middlesbrough.

“He is a good friend of mine. He is a proper defender. We complete each other back then. Let’s say I am more into covering spaces while he gets in tight on strikers. I’m so pleased with his arrival.

“He has high-level experience and has played in many countries.

“He will definitely bring lots of professionalism and commitment to the team.”

With Wague in the line-up, Pahang will boast the tallest centreback partnership in the Super League.

The 30-year-old Wague is 1.91m in height while Goulon is 1.95m, the tallest player in the league.

Goulon said Wague isn’t the only one to bring professionalism to the team.

The Frenchman said new coach Thomas Dooley is a real pro who knows exactly what he wants to do with Pahang.

“I’ve only positive things to tell you about him. He knows exactly what to do and how to do it.

“Everything he says is pretty straightforward.

“But it will take time to see that being reflected on the field. I’m sure once we get used to the system, we’re going to be a strong team.”

During his playing days, Dooley was a defensive midfielder with the United States national team. He captained the squad during the 1998 World Cup.

He is familiar with the region as he had served as the head coach of the Philippines national team from 2014 to 2018.
