Joint venture Clean Beach Initiative launched

HENGYI Industries Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between China and Brunei, launched its Clean Beach Initiative as part of its long-term Corporate Social Responsibility in preserving the local environment towards a sustainable future.

As part of the initiative, Hengyi installed two signages and six recycle bins at Muara Recreational Beach, and two recycle bins at Serasa Beach as a reminder to the public to help keep the beach clean and to adopt a greener lifestyle.

Hengyi will also be engaging a cleaning company to ensure that the recycle bins are maintained and cleaned out regularly.

The petrochemical company also organised a beach clean-up activity where over 100 Hengyi staff and volunteers cleaned up litters and debris at Muara Recreational Beach.

Hengyi Industries is a joint venture between China’s Zheijiang Hengyi Group and Damai Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary under Brunei government’s Strategic Development Capital Fund.

Dayang Martinah, acting director of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation at the Ministry of Development, said at the event that the initiative is in line with the government’s efforts to minimise and reduce waste generation and disposal as well as to increase the recycling rate to achieve the target of 30% by 2035.

“I believe this is a good platform to encourage the public, especially beach-goers to practise segregating their recyclable and non-recyclable wastes, inculcating green and sustainable habits, and making sure that wastes are binned properly to prevent them from entering the oceans, or as we now term it, ‘marine debris’,” she said. — Xinhua
