Supersub Syahmi delivering when it matters

- By T. AVINESHWARAN

PETALING JAYA: Selangor wingback Syahmi Safari (pic) proved that he is a true professional footballer.

Despite falling down the pecking order and warming the substitute’s bench, Syahmi lived by his adage of always being prepared when called upon to perform.

And that’s what he did for the Red Giants in the 88th minute by scoring the winning goal as a substitute in the 3-2 victory over Melaka in a Super League match at the Hang Jebat Stadium on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Syahmi believes that whether a player is a regular or a substitute they all have significant roles in the team. And they must perform during critical times especially when coming on as a sub. In fact in Selangor’s last three matches, he has been a substitute and Sunday’s show was his best which bagged three points for the team.

“So glad I was able to score a goal as the last time I netted one was in 2019. In Selangor, whether you are a first-teamer or substitute, all players are essential.

“Especially the reserve players because when we are included we have to make sure we can give something on the field.

“Of course, if chosen for the first eleven I will do my best.

“But I realised my performance was not up to par and I need to improve further and I have done so bit by bit,” said Syahmi.

Speaking of his coach, Karsten Neitzel, Syahmi said the German demands a high level of intensity in training which makes every player work doubly hard in order to make the squad for match day.

“For me, he is very professional in training and the players will be at 100% to compete for a place in the starting line-up.”
