Wendy falters in bid to secure Malaysia’s first medal
PETALING JAYA: Wendy Ng Yan Yee fell short in her attempt to give the Malaysian contingent their first medal at the Diving World Cup in Tokyo.
Wendy could only finish 11th out of 12 divers with 271.20 points in the women’s individual 3m springboard final yesterday.
Wendy, who has earned her berth to the Tokyo Olympics, completed the five-dive final with 271.20 points.
She justified her presence in the Japanese capital by reaching the top 12 on Monday while another Olympics-bound diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri missed the cut.
In the semis, Wendy was placed eighth with 288.30 points while Dhabitah finished 14th (277.25).
Chen Yiwei kept China’s stranglehold in the event by winning the gold with 383.55 points.
United States diver Sarah Bacon claimed silver with 348.75 points while China’s Chang Yani settled for the bronze with 344.40 points.
But the real test for Malaysia comes today as Chew Yiwei and Mohd Syafiq Puteh will be out
to ensure there will be at least one male representative at the Olympics.
The men have been way off the mark thus far.
Yiwei and Ooi Tze Liang finished seventh in the 3m springboard synchro on Sunday while Jellson Jabillin and Hanis Nazirul Jaya Surya failed to make the top 18 semis in the 10m platform individual on Monday.
Britain’s Tom Daley claimed his second gold medal after winning the men’s 10m platform individual with 541.70 points.
Mexican Randal Willars Valdez got the silver with 514.70 points ahead of Canadian bronze medallist Rylan Wiens (488.55).
