Adeeba co-chairing renowned international HIV conference

KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia hits international headlines for Covid19 cases, Malaysia’s prominent infectious diseases expert Datuk Prof Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman (pic) continues to bring good news as she has been picked to co-chair an international HIV conference.

Dr Adeeba is the first Asian president of the International AIDS Society (IAS), with her two-year term having started on July 11, 2020. She is also the head of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.

The Australian-trained AIDS expert was the dean of Universiti Malaya’s medical faculty, and is actively sought by the media for her views on the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

The virtual meeting on HIV from July 18-21 will gather the world’s most prominent scientists, who will present critical advances in basic, clinical and operational research that sets the standards of HIV research.

Regarded as the world’s most influential conference on

HIV science, the event will also feature highly prominent speakers such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Dr Anthony Fauci, the head of the United States’ National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Merkel read physics in university and has a doctorate in the subject, while Dr Fauzi has become an international figure on Covid-19.

Others include Prof Dr Deborah Williamson from the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia and Dr Stephane Wen-Wei Ku from Taiwan’s Taipei City Hospital.

The IAS conference will see up to 7,000 participants worldwide attending the 60 sessions online with a local partner hub in Berlin, Germany, which was the original host city.
