Budding fashionistas put on impressive show
AS classes moved online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so too did an annual fashion showcase for the final year Diploma in Fashion Design students at INTI International College Subang (INTI).
Featuring the designs of six graduating students – Arina Yasmin, Lim Shim Yi, Kam Hui Ying, Tan Yen Li, Siti Zubaidah and Adriana Anuar – the recent INTICHANGE 06 fashion showcase saw the outfits, born from different concepts, presented by models on a virtual runway.
INTI’s Centre of Art and Design (ICAD) dean Ang Tong Yin said the challenges brought on by the pandemic had equipped the cohort with unique skillsets which would prepare them for the industry in the new norm.
“Through their final collections, the designers showed their creative thought processes, design solutions and creative passions.
“They will soon become professional designers who are instrumental in changing the fashion industry in our country,” she added.
Looking back on a year gripped by the enforcement of several phases of the movement control order, Tan said her major hurdle was acquiring the materials for her collection during her final semester.
“Travelling was restricted during the MCO, so I had to plan ahead of time.
“I resorted to buying everything online,” she shared.
She also revealed that she struggled with her studies and mental health.
“My lecturers and classmates came to my rescue. They reassured me that everything would fall into place,” she recalled, adding that the varsity’s Blackboard learning management system helped in easing their transition into online learning.
“Overall, it was an interesting final semester. It was not what I expected it to be, but it was an unforgettable one,” she added.
Adriana, whose start-up was launched early this year, has her sights set on building her brand, Adana.
“It is more than just a clothing brand; it aims to empower women through modest outfits.
“My time at ICAD has certainly provided me with the foundation and knowledge needed to pursue my dream of becoming a successful fashion entrepreneur,” she said.
INTI chief executive Dr Jane Lim said ICAD fashion graduates have over the years grown into widely recognised designers known not just for their skills but craftsmanship.
“This showcase is yet another example of their talent and it is exciting to see them progress out of the classroom and contribute to the industry,” she said.
Apart from the fashion showcase, ICAD students’ international exposure, innovative learning and individual development are enhanced through their participation in various competitions, and practical training with local and international labels, said the March 26 press release.
