TAR UC students raise over RM100,000 for charity
THANKS to some 2,000 Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) students, a whopping RM135,834.55 was raised for 12 charitable organisations recently.
The funds, raised as part of the Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism course conducted by the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH), were presented to the recipients during a virtual ceremony on April 19.
The students made it their personal crusade to help the underprivileged during the pandemic, said the varsity college in a press release.
Fund-raising project manager Wei Jia Hui, a first year Diploma in Business Administration student, was eager to share how everyone pooled their resources together from February to March to achieve the feat.
“We posted on social media platforms, shared links in group chats, and communicated through online platforms as we could not meet face-to-face during the pandemic.
“We really had to work as a team and we were proud to be given the opportunity to help those in need,” she said.
In his speech, TAR UC president Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei praised the students for their hard work and perseverance.
“Nurturing noble values among our students is one of the objectives of this course.
“To become a truly civilised nation, our youth must channel their energy to constructive activities that create a significant impact on the needy segments of society.
“In just a few weeks, the students were able to raise such a large sum of money.
“I would like to congratulate all those involved for doing an excellent job,” he said, adding that despite the challenges of online learning and the new normal, the students demonstrated resilience and good teamwork in their fund-raising project to make the lives of others better.
This, he said, was in line with TAR UC’s mission to provide a holistic education that focuses on producing many graduates with excellent values and attributes, besides having the necessary technical knowledge and skills.
A total of 3,968 generous donors, many of whom were family members, relatives, friends and lecturers, supported the students’ fund-raising efforts through online contributions.
Tilakasiri Simon of the Sri Satya Sai Dialysis & Educare Project said the organisation was very grateful to be among beneficiaries.
“We have over 50 centres nationwide serving the poor, needy and sick in dialysis care and children’s education.
“Many poor families cannot afford the treatment costing between RM2,500 and RM2,800 per month.
“We are here to give them a helping hand to lighten the family’s financial burden,” he said, adding that its first kindergarten was set up in Sungai Buloh back in 2019 and the children have achieved wonderful results thanks to the education provided.
“A big thank you to the students of TAR UC for these acts of kindness. You are individuals with sterling characters,” he said.
