The score means he was unable to better his Rio 2016 performance where he finished 47th.

Gavin didn’t hide his disappointment after fumbling in the 60-player field.

“It’s been a tough and exhausting week, to be honest. Travelling so much and my body clock has been terrible but nevertheless, I’ve enjoyed it and am honoured to have been able to represent Malaysia for the second time,” said the 27-year-old.

“Hopefully, I can do it in Paris (2024) again! Experience is always good, but it’s also a learning curve for me.

“I gave it my best and just did not click this week. In terms of my game this week, I’m frustrated and disappointed because I know I’m better than that.

“Unfortunately, I’ve been struggling this year, but things are showing signs already, which is good, just that it’s not time yet.

“I still need some time, and I’ve been working very hard on the swing with my coach Chris (O’connell).

“He’s coming over again to see me next week. I know it will get better. Just got to be patient and keep working.”

United States’ Xander Schauffele won the gold when he carded 18-under 266 with Slovakia’s Rory Sabatini coming in second with 17-under 267.

Taiwan’s C.T. Pan took the bronze after a seven-man playoff.
