PETALING JAYA: All Malaysians should proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang as a sign of solidarity in the nation’s fight against the Covid19 pandemic, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Prime Minister said he hoped that the public would respond to the call with pride and respect to fly the flag in their residences and on their vehicles, saying that the flag was a national symbol that could evoke a spirit of patriotism.
“Let us all do this together for the love of our country, accompanied by hopes and prayers that the nation will recover from the pandemic and that lives would return to normal,” he said during the launch of the National Month celebration and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign yesterday.
He said the practice of flying the flag should be made the norm without any feelings of shame or embarrassment, especially as it had been 64 years since the country gained independence.
He expressed his hope that all Malaysians – from civil servants to those in the private sector – would heed the government’s call to fly the flag with pride, order and respect.
“I believe that through the love of the country, we can maintain a harmonious life of mutual love and unity among the people despite differences in race, religion and background,” he said.
Muhyiddin said he realised that while the country was in a challenging period as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, he was confident that Malaysians loved the country and would heed the lessons and the aspirations of the importance of celebrating this historical month when independence was gained.
“We were born here and became citizens who swore allegiance to defend it until the end of our lives.
“The fighting spirit of the leaders and of our ancestors in obtaining independence should be a lesson to all of us.
“This time we are in a war against an unseen enemy and it is more dangerous,” he said.
