‘PM offer in line with Rulers and rakyat’s desire for reform’
PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s offer of reforms to the opposition is in line with the Rulers’ and people’s desire to see an end to politicking, says Umno’s Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic).
The Federal Territories Minister who is also a key ally of the Prime Minister said the people’s sentiments showed that they were not in favour of politicking and power struggles.
“The royal addresses by the rulers of Johor, Selangor and Pahang have also shown the same desire.
“Therefore, the offer of a bipartisan and inclusive transformation plan as well as a focus on national recovery by the Prime Minister is out of the box and something that should be considered,” he said, as reported by Sin Chew Daily and China Press yesterday.
Annuar also criticised those who reacted negatively to Muhyiddin’s bipartisan offer.
“For those who are still stuck in vengeance politics, jealousy and factionalism, they will surely give negative knee-jerk reactions.
“But for those who genuinely want what is best for the rakyat and serve them, for those who want to see reforms, it is appropriate to follow up with the offer,” he said.
He noted that Muhyiddin’s offer could serve as a “political reset” and the start of mature politics in Malaysia.
Umno, too, he said, could consider this and make additional proposals of reform.
Twenty-three of Umno’s 38 MPS are still with Muhyiddin after the others withdrew their support. This is still short of a parliamentary majority, however. Muhyiddin now has the support of 100 out of 220 MPS (two seats are vacant after the death of their incumbents) in the Dewan Rakyat, 11 short of a simple majority.
On Friday, Muhyiddin, in a special and televised address, had sought bipartisan support from the opposition, saying that it was crucial to bring the nation out of the political crisis.
If the opposition agreed to bipartisan support, he said, a special Dewan Rakyat sitting would be convened soon to table a motion of confidence.
Muhyiddin had also assured that he would make decisions that were honourable and constitutional in his attempt to solve the ongoing political crisis.
His offers included providing equal funding for opposition MPS, imposing a term limit for the premiership, introducing anti-hopping laws and ensuring a more inclusive composition of parliamentary select committees.
