Woman suffers dad’s debt
Siblings plead with evasive father as lenders harass family
JOHOR BARU: A daughter wants her father to return home and settle the debt that he has with a licensed moneylending company which has been harassing her family over the last 10 months.
The 31-year-old woman, who wanted to be known only as Ng, said her father, 55, left their home in Indahpura, Kulai, before the harassment started.
“The problem started on Dec 12 last year when I was working as a nurse at a clinic. My younger brother called me to say that three men were creating a scene in front of our house.
“I immediately went home to check and the men accused my father of borrowing RM50,000 from the company they worked for and told me to pay up his debt,” she added.
Ng said this at a virtual press conference organised by deputy MCA national public complaints and service bureau chief Chua Jian Boon here yesterday.
She added that when she asked for documents to show that her father took the loan from them, the three men refused her request claiming that as a daughter, she should pay up the debt.
“I refuse to pay up the debt because it is not us who borrowed the amount.
“And since then, they have been harassing us by putting up a banner at our house and using speakers to inform our neighbours about the debt on a daily basis,” she said.
Ng also said they tried to ask her father about the loan but he was evasive. She pleaded with the company to stop disturbing her family as they were not the ones who took the loan.
“I know that my father is still living somewhere in Johor but we don’t know the exact location,” she said.
Meanwhile, Chua urged the company to stop harassing the family as they had been living under tremendous pressure ever since.
“It is not right for the company to force the family to pay up the father’s debt as they did not provide them with any documents to support their claims and none of the family members signed any documents as guarantor,” he added.
