Sabah and Sarawak to enjoy more development

Sabahans and Sarawakians have been given greater focus and access to development under the 12MP, says Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the plan clearly showed the government’s intention to develop both states and narrow the socio-economic gap with the rest of the country, in line with the spirit of the Malaysian Family.

“The government is committed to resolving Sabah and Sarawak’s claims under the Malaysia Agreement 1963, the need for basic infrastructure, regulatory power for gas and electricity, digitalisation and security.

“Other important matters include the construction of bridges, upgrading 1,400km of rural roads and completing the Pan Borneo Highway,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister also welcomed the allocation of Rm4.09bil for Sarawak to implement the National Digital Network (Jendela) throughout the plan’s duration, which would enhance broadband coverage through the provision of digital infrastructure, while new power plants would improve electricity coverage.

“The 12MP is well planned and covers all groups in Malaysia, including those in Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.

Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said the 12MP contained development action to make a “significant difference” in Sabah and Sarawak.

“These actions are targeted to deliver tangible results and ensure a sustainable impact on Sarawak’s economic potential, green growth, infrastructure investment, digital transformation, connectivity and improved access to basic necessities, benefiting all quarters in urban and rural areas alike,” he said.

Under the 12MP, Sabah and Sarawak will continue to receive between 15% and 18% each of the total basic development allocation annually.

This is part of the Federal Government’s commitment in ensuring that less developed states are given priority in the development allocation, the plan’s report stated.

“A significant portion of this allocation will be channelled to the economic sectors in both states. This will contribute towards improving infrastructure and basic facilities in these two states,” it said.

Basic infrastructure provision will be intensified in both states, including upgrading and constructing roads and bridges, improving access to clean water and electricity and enhancing broadband coverage. Digital infrastructure will be expanded under Jendela to contribute to 100% broadband coverage in populated areas.

Rural water supply coverage in both states is targeted to reach 98% by 2025.
