Lowest figures in more than two months

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Covid-19 figures continued to improve, with the country reporting its lowest daily case number in over two months.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country had 10,959 new cases, taking the cumulative total to 2.2 million.

“Of the 10,959 new cases, 98% of them are either mild or asymptomatic cases. Another 205 cases (1.9%) are Category 3, 4 and 5 cases,” he said in his daily update.

The last time Malaysia reported fewer daily cases was on July 18, when the country recorded 10,710 infections.

Only two states reported four-digit case increases: Sarawak with 2,723 and Johor with 1,226 cases.

Selangor recorded 979 new cases, its lowest since early May.

Kuala Lumpur continued reporting low cases numbers with 298 new infections yesterday.

There were 16,430 patients discharged yesterday, making it the 11th consecutive day where recoveries outnumbered new cases.

The country’s cumulative Covid19 recoveries surpassed the two-million mark, at 2,005,947 yesterday.

This is a recovery rate of 90.8%. The number of patients in intensive care units (ICUS) dropped below the 1,000 mark to 980 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said of the 980 ICU patients, 862 were confirmed Covid-19 cases while the others were suspected cases.

There are 579 patients on ventilator support.

Malaysia’s infectivity rate was at an Rt level of 0.92 as at Sunday.

Pahang, with an Rt level of 1.02, is the sole state in the country with an Rt level of more than 1.0.

An Rt level of less than 1.0 means that the infection spread is shrinking.

The Health Ministry identified 19 new infection clusters nationwide.

This brings the current total of active ones to 1,165.

The ministry’s Covidnow website reported that the country’s Covid-19 death cases statistic was still on a decreasing trend.

The average number of deaths in the last seven days, based on actual date of death, is 90.

This is a decline from early August when the average was around 300 deaths a day.

The country’s active Covid-19 cases have gone down to around 180,000, of which 83% are people with mild or asymptomatic infections and who are undergoing home quarantine.
