Dutch Klok makes Indonesia tick

-

AS the only naturalised player in the Games, it is obvious that all eyes are on Indonesia’s midfielder Marc Klok (pic).

While most teams in the tournament have mixed heritage players, the Dutchborn Klok is an exception. He got his citizenship in April this year after completing five years in Indonesia.

The 29-year-old, one of three overaged players in the Indonesia Under-23 team, has been a stabilising factor in Garuda Muda’s midfield.

The other overage players are captain and defender Fachruddin Aryanto, 33 and fellow midfielder Ricky Kambuaya, 26.

With the likes of Aryanto and Kambuaya, it is no surprise to see Klok helping the football-crazy nation get to the semi-final, where they will face 16-time winners Thailand at the Thien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh today.

Donning the famed red, white and green jersey comes with lots of expectations, so when it was announced that Klok would be part of the Games, he knew exactly what to expect.

It was also his chance to show coach Shin Tae-yong that he had what it takes to win his first international cap.

“Yes, expectations are high. But it’s also a gift – because that means people value you highly,” said Klok, a youth product of Eredivisie club Utrecht.

“I think I had a slow start here, adapting to the playing style, coaching style and getting to know my teammates.

“But in the last two group games, I felt connected and I’m on the right track to realising my targets.

“The Indonesian fans are passionate. When we do well, they love us, when we don’t do well, they hate us. So it’s up to us to do well and receive the love!”

The Persib Bandung player has been used as a deep-lying playmaker with more emphasis on helping the team’s defensive line.

He certainly fits South Korean Taeyong’s demand for high workrate and discipline and stops attacks before they reach the defence.

Klok is enjoying his time with some of the country’s top talents like wingers Witan Sulaeman, 20, Egy Maulana Vikri, 21, Marselino Ferdinan, 17, and striker Ronaldo Kwateh, 17.

“It’s great. I am really enjoying the journey so far. We are on the right track.

“It’s a pleasure to work with these huge talents. In terms of quality, they are progressing well. They have a bright future ahead.”

Asked about their opponents Thailand, Klok said he was ready to face them.

“I don’t mind who we are facing as long as we win. That’s the most important thing in knockout matches.

?? ?? “I have won four Cups in my career already. And it all starts with the mindset and belief of winning it.
“What’s my aim in Hanoi? To receive a gold medal and be the best player of the tournament. We should always aim for the highest possible.”
