EC: Early voting centre in Bentong closed earlier after process ended

BENTONG: An early voting centre at the Bentong district police headquarte­rs was closed earlier than scheduled as the voting process was completed, the Election Commission (EC) disclosed.

Seven officers who had tested positive for Covid-19 were allowed to cast their early votes, an EC official said.

At 1pm, the EC allowed the seven to queue up to vote, adding that they were wearing face masks and observed physical distancing.

After the district police headquarte­rs closed at 2pm, Fire and Rescue Department personnel helped with the sanitation and disinfecti­on process.

Bentong police chief Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar said 258 police personnel cast their ballots at the district police headquarte­rs, with a line already forming before polling opened at 8am.

A total of 1,156 early voters, comprising military personnel, members of the police force and their spouses, cast their early votes here.

According to an EC officer, 506 army personnel and officers cast their ballots at Bentong camp.

At the Mempaga army camp, some 392 army personnel cast their early ballots. The early voting centres opened from 8am to 5pm.

Barisan Nasional’s candidate for the Bentong parliament­ary seat Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai visited the Bentong police headquarte­rs and Bentong army camp, while Perikatan Nasional’s Bilut candidate Datuk Seri Chandra Balabedha went to the Bentong camp at 9am.

Pakatan Harapan candidate Young Syefura Othman was also seen visiting the early voting centres at the district police headquarte­rs, Bentong and Mempaga camps.
