Timmy to teammates: Keep up the good show

PETALING JAYA: Keep it up, guys!

This is the message issued by national bowler Timmy Tan to his teammates after they made an impressive start in the men’s team event at the IBF World Cup.

Timmy, along with Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, Rafiq Ismail, Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek won six of their seven round robin matches at the Suncity Tenpin Bowl in Queensland, Australia, yesterday.

The team beat UAE (2-1), Canada (2-0), Bermuda (2-0), Sweden (2-0), Puerto Rico (2-0) and New Zealand but lost (0-2) to the Czech Republic.

Their near-flawless start has seen them sit joint top of the 14-team standings alongside Germany with 18 points.

Timmy was pleased with the team’s performances so far and has called on his teammates to keep up the good work.

“All of us did well in our matches so far. We were under pressure in some situations but we made it through and won those matches. But we don’t want to stop here as there is a lot more work to do,” said Timmy.

The top-eight teams will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the women’s team need to do better to make the semi-finals after a mixed start.

The team comprising Sin Li Jane, Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, Natasha Roslan and Esther Cheah beat the United States (2-0) and Singapore (2-0) but lost to Germany (0-2) and Australia (1-2) to occupy fifth spot in the eight-team standings with six points.

Only the top four will qualify for the semi-finals after 14 matches.

The team will bowl against the Philippines, Sweden and New Zealand today.

Despite the less than convincing start, Li Jane pointed out that there was still a long way to go and the team were still in with a shot to make the last four.

“There’s still a long way to go and we just have to work harder in our matches tomorrow (today). We need to focus on what we do best and take it one match at a time,” said Li Jane.
