Metmalaysia: Not all gloomy for several luckier states

KUALA LUMPUR: Several states are expected to experience good weather as Malaysians go to the polls today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (Metmalaysia), on its website, is forecasting no rain in the morning in Kuala Lumpur and Perlis.

Putrajaya is expected to experience good weather in the morning and afternoon, while the same condition is forecasted for Melaka and Labuan in the afternoon.

Thunderstorms and rain are expected to occur in most states in the afternoon namely Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak.

Metmalaysia is predicting good weather in Sarawak in the morning but rain is expected in some areas across the state in the afternoon.

In Sabah, four areas are expected to experience rain and thunderstorms in the morning and afternoon namely Papar, Kimanis, Beaufort and Sipitang.

The temperature nationwide is expected to be between 23°C and 33°C.

According to Bernama, Metmalaysia is also predicting that wind concentration in the coastal areas of Kelantan and Terengganu, with the potential for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds.

The wind concentration is also expected to occur in the Straits of Malacca for four days from Nov 21, which has the potential to cause squall line incidents.

Separately, the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) has issued a notice of preparedness for possible flash floods in Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah.

In a statement, it said based on rain forecast information provided by Metmalaysia, the South-east Asia-oceania Flash Flood Guidance System and DID’S flood forecast model, there is a possibility of flash floods in several locations if heavy rain or a significant thunderstorm occurs.

In Perak, the areas that might be affected are Hilir Perak, Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, while in Melaka (Central Melaka), Penang (South-west, Central Seberang Perai, Northern Seberang Perai and North-east), as well as Klang and Petaling in Selangor.

In Johor, the areas are Batu Pahat and Pontian, Port Dickson (Negri Sembilan), Besut (Terengganu), Limbang, Bintulu and Kuching (Sarawak) and Beaufort (Sabah).

The DID said the notice was issued to allow all residents, especially in high-risk areas, to be aware of any possibility of flash floods during the period.
