Baram polling suspended due to bad weather

KUCHING: Bad weather caused voting to be suspended at 11 polling stations in the Baram parliamentary constituency in Sarawak as election workers could not be transported there.
Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said this was an unforeseen situation that could not have been avoided.
“Mother Nature is not something you can control and for the safety of the election staff and the voters, I believe the best decision was made,” he said.
Telang Usan is one of the three state seats in Baram.
Dennis added that it was now up to the Election Commission (EC) to handle the situation.
The suspension of voting affected 11 out of the 194 polling stations in the constituency, said the EC in a statement.
“Officials are not able to reach the centres by air, land or water.
“Voters will be notified of the new polling date later when it is safe for officials and voters to get to the polling station,” said EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh.
The Baram constituency is located towards the interior of Miri in northern Sarawak. It has 59,535 voters.
Incumbent Datuk Anyi Ngau from GPS is facing Pakatan Harapan’s Roland Engan and independent Wilfred Entika in the seat.
