Retired navy officer Mohamed Sharif Kalam has exercised his right to vote for the 14th time.

“I am very grateful that I am still being granted good health to vote. This is the 14th time that I have voted after first doing so in the second general election in 1960,” he said.

During the first general election in 1955, he did not vote as he had not yet turned 21.

The 86-year-old was among the individuals who hoisted the Malayan flag for the first time when the country celebrated its independence on Aug 31, 1957, at Stadium Merdeka.

Sharif observed that the atmosphere and voting methods then and now were not much different, and the process yesterday was smooth.

Despite his age, Mohamed Sharif drove to the polling station.

He said he did not want to miss the opportunity to vote as it is his responsibility as a Malaysian.

He hoped that all Malaysians, regardless of race and age, would be equally involved in the country’s democratic process that would determine its future.

“As Malaysians, especially the younger generation, we need to learn history and get involved in the voting process; that is our responsibility.

“I may be old but I am patriotic and love my country.

“I will continue to vote as long as I am able,” he added.
