JOHOR BARU: Getting their scrolls together at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) convocation here made the occasion even more memorable for twins Amirah Syafirah Rizal and Amirah Syahirah.

They graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in electrical and electronic engineering.

The sisters, who are 23, said they had always been together and their focus now would be on helping their family.

“We have never been apart. We have been in the same class since primary school up to university. In fact, we were also roommates throughout our four years in UTM.

“Our focus now is to help our family as we are the only ones who have graduated from university among our eight siblings.

“While we plan to further our studies together in the future, for now, we will work hard to earn money and help support the family,” said Amirah Syafirah when met after receiving her scrolls during the 66th UTM Convocation ceremony here yesterday.

She said her father is a retired bus driver while their mother cannot work due to health issues.

She also shared that both she and her sister had received job offers to work at the same company in Changi, Singapore.

“I am glad that we get to continue being together even as we enter the working world. We will start our jobs in the engineering company starting Dec 12,” she said.

Meanwhile, Amirah Syahirah said among advantages of studying together was that they always had each other to turn to during difficult times.

“Although we look the same, we both have different strengths. For example, my sister is good at taking notes while I am good with numbers. So, we get to help each other in our studies.

“On top of that, we always have each other for moral and emotional support. If one of us is feeling down, the other is there to lift her spirits up,” she said.

She is also grateful that both share the same interest in engineering which allows them to choose the same path.

“We know of other pairs of twins who got separated as they pursued their ambitions. Luckily for us, we both have the same passion and this allows us to stay together,” she said.

The duo was among 7,934 graduates, including 755 international students from 42 countries, who received their scrolls during the convocation ceremony here.
