Eei Hui: Yew Sin-ee Yi can reach World Tour Finals semis if they’re more consistent

PETALING JAYA: Independent men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-teo Ee Yi (pic) have the ability to reach the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals next month in Bangkok, Thailand, but they need to improve on their consistency.

That’s the verdict of their coach Chin Eei Hui who feels the pair is world class but much will depend on their form.

The world No. 8 pair have reached the quarter-finals or beyond in 12 of the 15 tournaments they had played this year but the Australian Open on Sunday was their first final appearance this year.

They missed out on a chance to secure a first title in two years after losing 21-16, 22-20 to world No. 14 Liu Yuchen-ou Xuanyi of China. Their last title was the Thailand Masters in 2020.

Despite that, Eei Hui still believes the pair has the quality to shine in the season finale in Bangkok from Dec 7-11.

“They have the quality to reach the semi-finals. However, their form often fluctuates and much will depend on their form of the day,” said Eei Hui.

“They need to be more consistent in order to remain in the top 10 and also win titles.

“They played well in the semi-finals (Australian Open) but they were not in their best form in the final,” said Eei Hui, who will be leaving for Auckland in February next year to become a coach at the North Harbour Club in New Zealand.

Yew Sin-ee Yi are expected to finish second behind Fajar Alfian-rian Ardianto of Indonesia in the World Tour rankings and there is a possibility they may cross swords with Yuchen-xuanyi in Bangkok.

World champions Aaron Chia-soh Wooi Yik are also one of the eight pairs to feature in the Finals.

Meanwhile, world No. 33 Ng Tze Yong’s men’s singles semi-final appearance in Sydney is sufficient to propel him into the top 30 which will enable him to play at the Malaysian Open and other top-ranked events in the Badminton World Federation calendar next year.
