Floods hit this village 50 times in one year

Fear grips families as some houses become hotspots

GUA MUSANG: Experiencing flash floods nearly 50 times in just one year has caused deep concern and fear among families living in Kampung Batu Papan 2, whenever the northeast monsoon hits Kelantan.

Resident Chong Lip Meng, 48, said that more than 50 families in the area have been struggling with the problem for over five years, and there are even some houses that often become hotspots during floods.

“Every time it rains heavily for more than two hours, the water begins to rise and starts to flood the main bridge leading to my house.

“Six houses, including mine, are affected by flash floods.

“It is not only dangerous but also exhausting, because we have to be vigilant during the rainy season and even face the loss of property,” he said when met in the village today, reported Bernama.

Trader and gardener Chong Yok Fon, 50, expressed her hope that the authorities would take drastic measures to solve all the problems that have been plaguing the residents for several years.

“We hope there is an immediate solution to this problem. “We are not ready to move to a new location because this house is near my garden,” she said, adding that about 250 individuals are living in the village.

Galas state assemblyman Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim said the problem must be addressed soon and proactive measures must be taken so that the real cause of the flash floods can be immediately identified and resolved.

Meanwhile, the number of flood victims in Johor and Melaka has remained the same, while a decrease was recorded in Selangor, but in Perak, the number rose yesterday morning.

In Johor, the number of victims at three relief centres in two districts, namely, Tangkak and Segamat, remained at 62 people from 18 families, according to the district disaster management committee.

In Melaka, the state disaster management committee secretariat said 11 people from four families from Kampung Pulau and Kampung Belimbing in the Alor Gajah district are still at the Durian Tunggal state constituency office hall.

In Selangor, the state disaster management committee secretariat reported that the number of flood victims dropped to 391 from 400 on Monday night, and all victims are at nine relief centres, four of which are in Kuala Selangor and five in Kuala Langat.

In Perak, the number of victims rose to 780 people from 222 families who are at nine relief centres.

However, several roads in the Kerian and Perak Tengah are now open to light vehicles.
