Authoritie­s warn of possible flash floods as thundersto­rms expected till tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Thundersto­rms are expected over the next two days at several places in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

According to the warning issued by Metmalaysi­a, thundersto­rms are expected in the morning in Penang and Sarawak (Sri Aman and Sarikei) in addition to rain in one or two places in Perak, Selangor, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and some areas in Sarawak.

In the evening, thundersto­rms are expected in Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia with the exception of Putrajaya, Melaka and Labuan while at night, thundersto­rms are expected in Pahang, Labuan and some areas in inland Sabah.

Rain is forecast in Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang districts in Sarawak and Sabah’s west coast areas tonight, Bernama reported.

Metmalaysi­a has forecast thundersto­rms to occur in Penang and Sabah (Tawau, Sandakan and Kudat), in addition to rain in Melaka, Johor, Sabah (inland and west coast) and Labuan tomorrow morning.

In the evening, thundersto­rms are expected nationwide with the exception of Melaka, some areas in Sarawak (Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Mukah and Lembing) and Labuan.

At night, thundersto­rms are expected to occur in Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Sabah (inland and Tawau) and Labuan.

Rain is also forecast at night in Perak, Sarawak (Kapit, Bintulu, Miri, Limbang) and Sabah (west coast and Sandakan).

The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has issued a notice of preparedne­ss in the event of floods involving several areas in Johor, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Selangor, and Sarawak.

In a statement yesterday, the DID said, based on rain forecast informatio­n alerts by Metmalaysi­a, Southeaste­rn Asia-oceania Flash Flood Guidance System and the department flood forecast model, there is a risk of flash floods in some locations in the event of significan­t heavy rain or thundersto­rms occur.

“Notice of preparedne­ss has been issued to enable all residents, especially in the areas at risk, to be on alert in the event of flash floods during this period.

In Johor, among the areas involved are the Batu Pahat district, namely Mukim Simpang Kanan, Mukim Sri Gading, Mukim Tanjung Sembrong, Kota Tinggi district (Mukim Pengerang, Mukim Sedili Besar, Mukim Ulu Sungai Johor), Mersing (Mukim Teriang), Muar (Bandar Panchor, Mukim Bukit Kepong) and Tangkak (Mukim Bukit Serampang, Mukim Grisek).

In Kelantan, the areas involved are Kota Bharu (Mukim Baung, Mukim Padang Bungor, Mukim Panchor, Mukim Pulau Panjang, and Mukim Tebing Tinggi), whereas in Negri Sembilan the areas involve Mukim Jimah and its surroundin­g areas.

In Pahang, the areas involved are Rompin (Mukim Endau, Mukim Pontian) and Temerloh (Pekan Kuala Krau, Mukim Bangau, Mukim Jenderak, Mukim Kerdau, Mukim Lipat Kajang, Mukim Perak and Mukim Sanggang), whereas in Penang the areas are Seberang Perai Utara (Bandar Butterwort­h, Mukim 1 and Mukim 4).

In Selangor, the areas involved are Sepang (Pekan Tanjung Mas and Mukim Sepang), whereas, in Sarawak, it involves Miri Division (Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu, Kampung Pujut Padang Kerbau, Kampung Pujut Adong, Bulatan Boulevard, Kampung Damai Jaya Senadin, Krokop, Jalan Jee Foh, Taman Gilbert, Kampung Wireless, areas around Jalan Datuk Edward Jeli, Jalan Miri-pujut and Jalan Miripiasau).
