England definitely among the contenders in Qatar, says Kop ‘God’

-

Ex-england striker Robbie Fowler knows all about the big stage, having featured in the 2002 World Cup in Japan-south Korea. With the greatest show on earth back in asia, Starsport speaks to the legend whom the Kop call ‘god’ about the spectacle in Qatar.

Q: You played in only one World Cup in 2002. Tell us about your experience.

A: as I missed France ‘98 due to an injury, I was desperate to make an impression in 2002. But I only wished I had played more games, as I only made one appearance, coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 second-round win over denmark. Still, when I came on, it was a great feeling that I savour till this day.

Q: So, do England have a chance of winning the World Cup this time?

A: They have a very good chance. You can see the quality in this side in the 6-2 win over Iran. We have some fine individual players who can make a lot happen for the team. It was refreshing to see them going on the attack early against Iran, playing the ball quickly and maintaining the aggression.

Q: Who do you tip to lift the trophy in Qatar?

A: My early pick was Brazil, but now I believe England are also among the contenders. argentina and France will also be in the fray but watch out for Holland. They may be darkhorses this time, but don’t be surprised if they go further than expected.

Q: What’s your take on England’s new-gen like Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham?

A: It’s nice to see Saka growing, and I’m a huge, huge fan of Bellingham. They were brought up the right way from the grassroots level. They have upped their standard and they also play with a lot of joy. You can see that in their faces.

That aside, they also have the discipline and dedication to excel. Bellingham is not even 20 yet but he’s already top top quality.

Q: What’s needed for Asian teams to close the gap on the European and South American giants?

A: asian teams are technically very good. after the defeats of Qatar and Iran in their opening games, many are questioning if asian football is up to par on the biggest stage. But Saudi arabia’s shocking win over argentina is a good answer to that. With more exposure and experience in the top European leagues, many asian players will only get better and lift their teams on the big stage.
