Jamil sworn in as new Bugaya state rep
KOTA KINABALU: Jamil Hamzah (pic) from Parti Warisan has been sworn in as the new Bugaya assemblyman.
Jamil, who won by a 6,629-vote majority in the seven-cornered by-election on Nov 19, took his oath in front of Speaker Datuk Kadzim M. Yahya at the State Legislative Assembly building here yesterday.
The ceremony took place before the tabling of the 2023 Sabah budget by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
A lawyer by profession,
Jamil garnered
11,382 ballots against the closest contender, Barisan Nasional’s Abd Aziz Mohd Ibno, who polled 4,753 votes.
The by-election, which was held simultaneously with the 15th General Election, was called after incumbent assemblyman Manis Muka Darah, also of Warisan, died due to kidney complications on Nov 17, 2020.
The by-polls could not be held then as a result of the emergency declaration by the Federal Government to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
With the success in defending the Bugaya seat, Warisan now has 19 representatives in the 79-seat state assembly.
