Hopeful that the nation will heal itself quickly

I’M sure most of the rakyat would join me in registering our utmost appreciation to the Yang Dipertuan Agong and the Council of Rulers for ending the five-day political impasse following the 15th General Election (GE15).

In guiding “(almost) like-minded” political parties to arrive at the best solution for Malaysia, the Rulers demonstrated the important role they play in ensuring a peaceful transition of power.

We recognised the enormity of the situation, given that this was perhaps one of the most polarised general elections that this country has experienced since gaining our independence in 1957.

Racial bigotry and religious extremism reared their ugly heads during the two-week campaign period, and hate speech deepened divides that became clearly palpable leading up to voting day on Nov 19.

New Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim does not have an easy task ahead.

He has to bring together MPS from different parties to focus on the most urgent tasks, which is attending to the many economic and social challenges the rakyat are facing. MPS must put aside their differences for the sake of the country.

The challenge for the 10th Prime Minister and his government is also to show those who voted for Perikatan Nasional that this is an inclusive government. Opposition MPS must play their role well and not ride on issues that can divide the nation but instead work constructively to keep the government in check.

We hope that any returning MPS who were in the Cabinet following GE14 in 2018 will be more sensitive about issues touching on race and religion, and be more respectful of the civil servants who have served in the ministries.

We are hopeful that Malaysia will heal itself quickly. All Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, should now work together to take our beloved country to greater heights.

The stock market and ringgit are already showing positive signs of upward trends while several world leaders have indicated their confidence in Malaysia under the new PM. We are optimistic the country will move forward strongly.
