PN candidate gives police statement on seditious remark

Perikatan Nasional candidate for the Padang Serai Parliamentary seat Datuk Azman Nasrudin has given his statement to the police over his remarks claiming that the recently formed government was “kerajaan zina” (government of adultery).

Azman said he had his statement recorded at the Kulim Hi-tech police station, here, at midnight or early Tuesday morning.

“... I (admit) that I was a bit harsh that night. (But) I was referring to Umno’s violation of its resolution, which has led to disappointment among the party’s grassroots members. This is about principles; the issue of a mixed or unity government is another story. Perikatan also accepts the decision of the Yang di-pertuan Agong,” he said when met during the election campaign in Kampung Nesa, here yesterday.

Last Sunday, Azman was reported to have issued a statement saying that there was a clear sign of rejection of Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional following the formation of a unity government, which he described as “kerajaan zina”.

Pakatan communications director Fahmi Fadzil has urged the police to investigate Azman for allegedly calling the unity government a “government of adultery”.

In a Twitter post, he also urged Azman to return his Datukship that was awarded by the Sultan of Kedah in June.

“It is rude of Azman to label the Yang di-pertuan Agong’s unity government as a ‘government of adultery’. He must return the award and cease using his datukship.

“(Azman’s remark) is an insult to the Sultan of Kedah, who was with the Malay rulers to discuss the appointment of the 10th prime minister. He must be investigated,” reported Bernama.

Police have warned the public not to create tension or any provocation on social media that could threaten public safety and order.

Inspector-general of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, said this after the police detected social media users uploading content with racial or religious sentiments and insults towards the royal institution following the 15th General Election results and the ongoing formation of the government.

“The police are warning social media users to refrain from abusing the platform to spread provocative content that may cause public alarm,” he said.
