Disabled man graduates with PHD in engineering

A DEFORMITY in his leg caused by a spinal problem has never discouraged Noramlee Mohamed Noor, 55, from continuing his studies to the highest level, reported Harian Metro.

“As a disabled person, if I can succeed, so can others,” said the PHD graduate in Power Electrical Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

“I could no longer walk in 2015 and in 2016, I had to undergo spinal surgery.

“After that, I was paralysed. Because of that, the doctor advised me to apply for an OKU card,” he said in an interview.

When Noramlee was told that he was paralysed, he was really discouraged from continuing with his PHD studies.

“My supervisor advised me to defer for a year. During that time, I continued working as a lecturer at the Kulim campus of Universiti Kuala Lumpur in Kedah.

“After a year, I resumed my studies. During the three years I was at UPM full-time, my wife helped me with moving around. My family and supervisor also encouraged me,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Noramlee managed to complete his PHD within six years and would continue to lecture.

“I want to help our young people better understand and be interested in the field of engineering because the country lacks skilled workers in this field,” he added.

> According to Kosmo!, actor Hun Haqeem is proud of the nickname “Oppa Malaysia” his fans have given him.

However, the 24-year-old is not letting the title – an affectionate term given to handsome Korean actors – get to his head.

“I’ve never put the title of Malaysia’s ‘Oppa’ on myself despite some comments from the fans.

“I have never admitted that I am the Malaysian version of an ‘oppa’. It’s fun when people praise me but I prefer to be called the ‘last Malay man’ like (actor) Remy Ishak,” he said during an event.

The Instagram account of the actor, who recently shared a picture of him wearing a white shirt in a padi field, was flooded with comments from fans gushing over his good looks.

“Was wondering which ‘oppa’ took a picture in the padi field,” wrote one netizen.

“The more handsome, the more Korean his face is. It melts my heart,” praised another female fan.
