Weng Kean wins esports gold in Kazan

KUALA LUMPUR: Electrical engineerin­g PHD holder Yew Weng Kean (pic) signed off the Internatio­nal Youth E-games Championsh­ips in Kazan, Russia, yesterday with an excellent performanc­e that resulted in a gold medal for Malaysia in the Hearthston­e event.

The 32-year-old produced a great style of play to defeat Saad Andaleeb from Bangladesh 3-0 to keep the gold medal in his grasp.

“I feel amazing for the win and very satisfied with my performanc­e. It also gave me good preparatio­n going into the upcoming Asian Games as some of the participan­ts here will be involved there as well.

“Very grateful for the opportunit­y to represent Malaysia and with this win, we can fly our flags high among the Organisati­on of Islamic Cooperatio­n (OIC) countries,” he said through Whatsapp.

Yew or known as wkyew90 in the world of esports – took home one gold through the same event when esports was first introduced as a competitiv­e game at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila.

The national team also brought home the bronze medal in the Dota2 event through the Myth Avenue Gaming team, comprising Gan Hou Sing, Mohd Nur Alif Alias, Chan Kok Khin, Ng Wei Poong and Chong Kin Kit.

The Russian Federation won the gold medal and Kazakhstan took silver.
