AS part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, Heriot-watt University Malaysia (HWUM) recently awarded scholarships to 280 students.

The recipients – young local and international talents who had completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) Senior and equivalent qualifications – are beneficiaries of the varsity’s IMPACT Scholarship, Global Citizenship Scholarship, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Scholarship, High Achiever’s Scholarship, Foundation Excellence Award, Star Education Fund and Leaders with Impact Scholarship.

Committed to assisting bright and deserving talents from all segments of the community, the varsity, through its scholarships and pastoral care, intends to give recipients the chance to study at HWUM, a press release dated Oct 28 read.

Through the education provided by the varsity, these students will be able to discover their purpose in life, and to mobilise their purpose into making a positive impact in the world, it added.

According to media reports, of the 95,745 eligible applicants wishing to further their studies at public universities this year, a total of 71,615 placements in the country’s 20 public institutions were offered to candidates who had completed their STPM examinations or its equivalent.

In view of this, and in support of the Higher Education Ministry’s aspirations to build the country’s talent pipeline, HWUM aims to offer scholarships to at least 10 students a year, over the next decade.

Eligible students will receive a full scholarship which covers tuition fees and cost-of-living allowances for the entire duration of their studies.

Student Nisha Leann said the IMPACT Scholarship has made a positive impact in her life.

“It gave me the courage and confidence I needed to dream big, motivating me to work towards my dream. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to the scholarship panel who believed I would be a worthy recipient.

“I hope that one day I can make an impact by paying this opportunity forward to someone else, making a difference in their lives.”

HWUM provost and chief executive officer Prof Mushtak Al-atabi said, “Our mission is to ensure that people from all socioeconomic backgrounds have equal opportunity to receive a quality education. Together with our business partners, we’re offering scholarship programmes that will help bright, hardworking students to attain a quality UK education.

Together, we can make a difference towards Malaysia’s goal of achieving inclusive and sustainable growth, which will improve the lives of all.”
