TAR UMT wins big in accounting challenges

The varsity’s students bag multiple awards in deloitte contests

TUNKU Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) recently dominated the national level Deloitte Tax Challenge 2022, with its students bagging the top three spots, and the Merit, Best Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Presenter, and Best ACCA Writer awards.

Best ACCA Presenter Vincent Lui Kok Leong was crowned champion in the individual category, with Best ACCA Writer Tan Hui Theng and Eason Yip Chun Fai named first and second runners-up, respectively, at the competition’s finals on Nov 17.

Francis Tan Wei Hoong won the Merit Prize.

The second runner-up in the individual category and the Best ACCA Writer award in the team category were also awarded to the varsity’s students.

All the winners from TAR UMT are currently pursuing their Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme.

Having emerged champion at the national level after competing against more than 1,000 participants from 35 higher education institutions (HEIS) nationwide, Lui, who signed up for the competition to test his limits and abilities, will be representing Malaysia at the Deloitte Southeast Asia Tax Challenge 2023 in the individual category.

“The competition was intense because of the time limitation. For the final stage, we only had two hours to complete a written assessment and presentation.

“I was very focused to ensure I understood what the judges were looking for so that I could address them in my presentation,” Lui, who took home a cash prize of RM3,800 and trophies for his effort, said.

Crediting the varsity and his lecturers with providing him with many opportunities to hone his skills, Lui said he was trained to complete tasks fast, to identify problems and issues, and to conceptualise effective and practical solutions.

Earlier, the TAR UMT students had made the varsity proud when they competed in the Deloitte Audit Business Challenge 2022 from Oct 21 to Nov 5.

Representing TAR UMT, Lui, together with Lee Sin Xuan and Soo En Yi, emerged champion in the team category.

The business challenge was aimed at testing the participants’ audit and accounting knowledge and understanding.

During the competition, over 800 students from 35 HEIS around the country battled it out by answering multiple-choice questions, doing a video presentation, and competing in a game related to audit processes.

Noting that the business challenge was the only audit-related competition to be held locally, Lee said as final year students, the trio wanted to test themselves by applying what they had learnt to real-world scenarios.

“We are so happy to have achieved our aim. It was great to meet and interact with leaders in the industries,” said Lee.

Sharing her experience, Soo said it was important that the team understood each question well before they provided the relevant answers and solutions.

“The competition was demanding but the good foundation we had built during our diploma years and the application of techniques and skills to real industry problems we had learnt in our degree programme proved advantageous.

“We are very grateful to our lecturers who had guided us throughout our journey,” she said.

The team won a cash prize of RM8,000, a trophy and an opportunity to join Deloitte Malaysia upon graduation for their winning effort.
