NSC probe sexual misconduct claim
The National Sports Council (NSC) are investigating allegations of sexual misconduct involving a para swimming coach and an underage athlete under her care.
The Misconduct and Harassment in Sports Committee will look into the matter, said NSC who added that any one found guilty of wrongdoings would face decisive action, including immediate contract termination.
“The safeguarding officer empowered under the Safe Sport Code has initiated the necessary steps to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
“The allegations were brought to the NSC’S attention last week, leading to an immediate investigation by the committee, which includes interviewing all parties involved.
“We have given our full cooperation to the police, who have also begun their enquiry, ensuring a sensitive approach that will protect the privacy of the athlete involved,” the council said.
The NSC have also appealed to the media and general public to not speculate on the matter to protect the athlete’s welfare.
“The council have not received any reports or complaints from any para athletes regarding sexual misconduct by coaches before. Claims that the NSC tried to cover up or ignore such reports are therefore entirely baseless.
“The NSC will enforce all regulations within the Safe Sports Code and always work towards creating a safe environment for all our athletes,” they said.
The council added that comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and welfare of para-athletes under their programmes are also being prioritised, including making it mandatory since last year for athletes competing in an international tournament to have an accompanying officer with them.
