A new roof, fresh coat of paint and new air-conditioners were given to the Tebuk Mendeleng community of Sabak Bernam in Selangor.

OCBC Bank (M) Bhd, which already supports the community through a three-year RM648,538 mangrove rehabilitation programme, donated a further RM20,000 towards improving the facilities of SK Seri Mawar in Sungai Air Tawar.

These funds enabled a new roof over the “pondok wakaf” (resting hut) and three new air-conditioners for the computer lab as well as repainting parts of the primary school.

According to headmaster Zool Fadli, the bank’s Teluk Intan branch was quick to respond to the school’s request for funds.

OCBC Teluk Intan branch senior manager Alex Low Chuen Yee said the bank wanted to support local communities.

“A comfortable and wellequipped study environment is vital to academic success.

“I would also like to thank my colleagues who volunteered to conduct a financial literacy session for the pupils,” said Low, who participated in the bank’s mangrove tree planting programme in 2022.

Low said OCBC Bank understood that meeting the needs of local communities and the environment went beyond just monetary aspects, and included sustainability.

In conjunction with its 90th anniversary in 2022, the bank committed to planting and nurturing 9,000 mangrove trees over 4.5ha of degraded land in Tebuk Mendeleng.

OCBC Bank tied up with 2022 Merdeka Award recipient Global environment Centre (GEC) alongside Friends of Kampung Dato Hormat Mangroves for the rehabilitation project, which involved planting the trees and benefitting the local community.
