Brunch bliss for every common man
Indulgent time savouring hearty meals and enjoying aromatic brews in Taman Tun dr ismail
IN A city teeming with cafes, one may enjoy the quest for the perfect brunch spots.
Our journey one sunny afternoon led us to Plaza Vads in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, where Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR) is located.
Entering its cosy confines, we were welcomed by the enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee.
We noticed an island bar for diners to watch baristas at work.
The menu, featuring a plethora of interesting dishes, piqued our curiosity.
These included Acai Bowl, Yuzu Cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake.
Among the standout dishes was the Common Man Full Breakfast – a hearty meal of freerange eggs, succulent chicken sausage and grilled beef streaks.
Accompanied by herbed roma tomato, portobello mushroom, and freshly baked artisanal sourdough toast, each bite was a symphony of flavours.
The brunch menu, as we browsed through, presented appetising choices including house-made Crunchy Granola, Kouign Amann Toast and Umami Mushroom Avocado Toast for those in favour of something lighter.
However, if you like pancakes, don’t miss out on the Common Man Fluffy Pancakes that caught our eye.
Delivered to the table adorned with caramelised bananas, walnuts and a luscious drizzle of salted caramel sauce, the pancakes proved quite a hit especially among children.
Next on our culinary journey was the Beef Cheek Eggs Benedict where tender braised ox cheek melded seamlessly with poached eggs.
The addition of chive hollandaise provided a subtle yet delightful herbaceous note, perfectly complementing the rich meatiness of the dish.
For those embracing a plantbased lifestyle, CMCR has various options including the vibrant Acai Bowl and the innovative Impossible Meatball.
“Featuring sliced bananas, cacao granola and coconut flakes, Acai Bowl is a popular choice among diners who are on a diet due to its low calories,” said CMCR general manager Pua Lee Hoon.
The decadent desserts are also irresistible.
The Not Your Common Chocolate Cake lives up to its name with its flourless composition, delighting with an abundance of rich chocolate flavour.
Paired harmoniously with a scoop of velvety vanilla icecream, it provided the perfect balance of sweetness and richness.
As a cheesecake lover, the Yuzu Cheesecake tasted heavenly to me.
With its refreshing citrus infusion, the classic cheesecake is taken to new heights and gives the Not Your Common Chocolate Cake stiff competition.
The delicate balance of tangy yuzu, creamy cheesecake and zesty citrus caressed the taste buds with complete balance in each bite.
Of course, no visit is complete without sampling CMCR’S coffee.
Sourcing beans from various corners of the globe, the eatery’s dedication to quality shines through in every cup of coffee.
Established in 2013 in Singapore as a cafe and coffee roaster, CMCR opened its doors at Plaza Vads eight years ago as a roastery, academy and wholesale business.
It quickly became a beloved fixture in the cafe scene.
Drawing influence from international and local flavours, the menu celebrates both classic favourites and inventive twists on familiar dishes.
We requested for a cup featuring Aricha beans from Ethiopia, a delight with notes of candy lime, tangerine and toffee that left us craving for another serving.
Teas, fruit juices and smoothies are available for non-coffee drinkers.
Pua said a new lunch and dinner menu, featuring eight delectable dishes, was recently launched.
Highlights include a variety of house-made 12-inch pizzas, Japanese-style fried chicken, Barramundi Fish and Chips and Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Tiger Prawns.
Reservations are encouraged, especially on weekends.
