Staying on top of digital threats

- TERRENCE SIAU Country head (Malaysia) Sea Limited, a global consumer Internet company

HOW many people do you know who have been scammed in some way online?

How many times have you almost been duped by an online scammer?

How many times have you had to block the telephone number and email address of dubious individuals?

You may have answered “Yes” to at least one of the questions above.

In today’s digital age, online safety has become ever more important as most of us rely on digital means to go about our daily routines.

Recent statistics from the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department revealed a concerning 23% rise in online crime in 2023, with online fraud being the most prevalent.

As such, the establishment of a specialised digital crime department by the Royal Malaysia Police marks a crucial step forward in safeguarding our digital ecosystem.

There are plenty of benefits for the police to do this.

For example, by recruiting and training officers with expertise in digital forensics, cybersecurity, and technology, the police can stay ahead of evolving digital threats. Advanced monitoring and detection systems enable early identification and prevention of cybercrimes while cutting-edge tools facilitate effective investigation.

Initiatives focused on public awareness and education also play a significant role in empowering individuals and businesses to protect themselves against digital threats.

We fully support this initiative as it has always been our goal to create a safe and thriving digital ecosystem for everyone through our subsidiaries.

The setting up of a specialised digital crime department will indeed become a key component in creating a safer digital realm. We will continue to work closely with the police and other relevant bodies to drive awareness and education in combating cybercrime such as fraud and scams.

It is also encouraging to hear that the Dewan Negara has just passed the Cyber Security Bill 2024, aimed at bolstering the nation’s cybersecurity by enforcing specific measures and standards.

As Malaysia charts its course towards becoming a digitally-driven, high income nation and a regional leader in the digital economy, investments in digital crime prevention and responses are paramount. By prioritising digital security, we can safeguard the online ecosystem and pave the way for sustainable growth and prosperity.

Together, let us fortify our digital defences and propel Malaysia to become an advanced, digitalised nation.
