Region’s top amateurs to visit
Royal Selangor to host junior invitational next month
ROYAL Selangor Golf Club have announced the staging of the 2024 Rsgc-sportexcel Junior Invitational Championship, set to take place from May 14 to 16 in Kuala Lumpur.
The partnership with the Foundation for Malaysian Sporting Excellence (Sportexcel) paves the way for an event intent on hosting junior amateur golfers from Malaysia and the region.
In a statement, the club said the tournament “stands as a beacon for emerging talent, attracting participants from across Asia.
“This year, we anticipate the participation of approximately 90 talented young golfers.
“Among them are 19 players from the Malaysian Golf Association’s development programme. The field also boasts participants from Australia, Britain, India, Indonesia, Korea, and of course, Malaysia.”
The statement did not indicate who nor how many were drawn from these countries.
The club added that “Sportexcel’s mission to foster excellence in both sports and academics aligns perfectly with our commitment to nurturing the next generation of golf stars.
“Through this collaboration, Royal Selangor welcome Malaysia’s junior players to the tournament.
“Transitioning from a junior open to an invitational event underscores our dedication to providing players with a platform to showcase their skill.
“Invitations have been extended to Sportexcel players, state and club champions, and regional players, targeting boys and girls, 18 years of age, and below.”
Ezani Abu Bakar, the club’s golf convenor and organising chairman of the three-day tournament said: “It gives us great pleasure to once again welcome friends from around Malaysia and the region.
“This tournament is a particularly special occasion for us as it will be our second collaboration with Sportexcel.”
