PETALING JAYA: Running an errand for his parents each morning was routine for 22-year-old college student Chew Chun Sien, but last Wednesday it turned out to be a harrowing experience when he was attacked by two robbers near his house in Bandar Kinrara 2, Puchong

The assailants, angry that Chew did not have enough valuables on him, slashed him several times and inflicted serious injuries on the youth including an almost severed finger and a stab wound on his neck which narrowly missed an artery.

Chew was returning home after sending a tiffin carrier to a food caterer near his house when he was confronted by the two men on a motorcycle.

“It was just a 200m walk to a nearby food caterer and he was coming home. One of the men grabbed him by the neck, and at knife-point, demanded he hand over his valuables. He gave them his wallet but they wanted his handphone,” said Chew’s mother who only wanted to be known as Chin. “When he told them he did not have it, they attacked him. They fled when several bystanders shouted for help.”

Chin, 55, said her son, who was bleeding profusely, staggered home and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was warded.

Chin, an employee of an IT company, said Chew, the eldest of her three sons, had to undergo two surgeries.

“Doctors had to stitch up the wounds on his neck and stomach. He also had to undergo micro-surgery on his injured finger. Chew, who is pursuing a course in IT at a private college, was discharged the following day. Chin said a police report was lodged. “This has been such a terrifying experience for my family. We are so shaken up that we fear stepping out of our house,” she told theSun yesterday.

Chin, who had lived in the area for 23 years, said she learnt that there was an earlier incident where a middle-age woman was also attacked by two men believed to be the same assailants.

“The robbers had ordered the woman to remove her blouse thinking she had hid her valuables after she told them she had none with her. They fled at the sight of several residents.”

The area’s resident association pro tem committee chairman Mohamed Nazam Ali said efforts are being made to turn the area into a gated and guarded housing estate.
