Syed Ali honoured by Liverpool John Moores

PETALING JAYA: Nonexecutive chairman of Perbadanan Nasional Berhad Datuk Seri Syed Ali AlHabshee ( pix) has been awarded an honorary fellowship by Liverpool John Moores University, which is one of the highest accolades accorded by the university.

The award was presented by its pro-vice-chancellor (education) Prof Peter Byers, who said that Syed Ali has had a far-reaching impact on the educational landscape of the country.

In 2001, he established the Cheras Educational Foundation (YPC), which acted as an umbrella organisation to adopt schools and provide assistance both financially and also through training and motivational seminars.

“In his parliamentary district of Cheras, Syed Ali began adopting schools and raising funds with the specific aim of improving the school environment and facilities, and implemented a professional teacher-training programme linked to the welfare of the teaching staff,” said Byers.

The YPC programme is now used as a model across all Malaysian constituencies and has led to an improvement of more than 25% of students’ results in the last five years.

Syed Ali has over 30 years involvement in the corporate world, statutory bodies and governmentlinked companies in industries such as technology, tourism, oil and gas, telecommunications, manufacturing and several others.

He is also the chairman of Uzma Berhad, Asia Media Group Berhad, Redtone International Berhad and Bright Packaging Industry Berhad, companies listed on the Malaysian stock exchange. He is also a board member of Tourism Malaysia, Companies Commission of Malaysia and the executive director of the Federal Territory Foundation.

He is currently the Cheras Umno division chief, Cheras Barisan Nasional deputy chairman and secretary of the Federal Territory Umno liaison committee. by Timothy Achariam
