THE MALAYSIAN Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) will be performing at the opening ceremony of the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session.

The event will be held at the Plenary Hall, KLCC, tonight at 8pm and will be graced by IOC president Thomas Bach, IOC honorary president Jacques Rogge and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Some 3,000 international delegates comprising IOC members, Olympic city representatives, sponsors and partners will be present at the event which will be televised live around the world.

The MPYO ( above), under the baton of local composer Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, will be performing our national anthem Negaraku as well as the Olympic Anthem followed by folk songs and local works such as Jambatan Tamparuli, Warisan and We are One.

The ensemble will also perform a specially-commissioned piece, Together in the Spirit of the Games, composed by local artiste Vivian Chua. The piece encapsulates unity, peace and sportsmanship made up of the five notes of the pentatonic scale to reflect the five rings of the Olympic symbol and the five continents of the world.

The MPYO offers a stage for young talent with each section of the orchestra receiving professional coaching and tutelage from the more senior musicians of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
