HERIOT-WATT University Malaysia (HWUM) recently received a generous donation for 62 software programme licences from leading supplier of technology and integrated solutions in the oil and gas industry, Schlumberger.

The Software Licence Agreement signing ceremony, which was held on Sept 29, was graced by representatives from Schlumberger Malaysia, vice-president and general manager Maen Razouqi and operations manager Christopher Singh. Representing the university were its COO and registrar Janice Yew, head of School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society Khalik Mohamad Sabil and head of marketing and student recruitment Lim Ming Hsiang.

The software programmes are anticipated to bring great benefit to HWUM’s School of Engineering and Physical Sciences as well as its School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. The programmes will serve as an enhancing tool to several of the university’s petroleum engineering courses, including drilling, geochemistry, geology, geophysics, information management, petroleum systems, production engineering and reservoir engineering.

BENEFICIAL PARTNERSHIP HWUM is among a handful of universities which Schlumberger approached and offered its programmes to. Its aim in donating the software licences was to enrich the students’ learning experiences and enhance the university’s research capabilities. Ultimately, it will increase the supply of capable professionals in meeting the industry’s ever-growing demands as Malaysia moves towards becoming a leading hub for oil field services.

HWUM’s partnership with Schlumberger Malaysia goes beyond the donation as Schlumberger also provides HWUM students with training and distantlearning programmes, of which many of its graduates work with the global provider of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to those in the oil and gas industry. Plans are also afoot for Schlumberger Malaysia to offer internship programmes to the university’s undergraduate students in the near future.

Known as a leading British institution for applied research and an internationally recognised centre for high calibre activity in science, technology and business, the university’s Putrajaya campus also offers foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
