NEPAL ELECTS FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT

KATHMANDU: Bidhya Devi Bhandari was elected Nepal’s first woman president on Wednesday in a parliament­ary vote. Bhandari, who won 327 votes, beat her competitor Kulbahadur Gurung, who got 214 votes, to secure the largely ceremonial post. Bhandari is the widow of the deceased chairman of the Communist Party of NepalUnifi­ed Marxist-Leninist Madan Bhandari. She got involved in politics through the communist student movement in 1979. The 54-year-old is currently the party’s vicechairm­an. – dpa
