Scammers con Thais with David Cameron pix

-

BANGKOK: A group of Thai women who say they were victims of scammers who promised them marriage and used pictures of British Prime Minister David Cameron as bait has filed a criminal complaint, police have confirmed.

The women were cheated out of a total of 23 million baht (RM2.7 million), said a source in the Metropolitan Investigative Unit who requested anonymity.

The scammers would pose as wealthy foreigners and propose marriage to their victims before asking them to pay taxes on luxurious gifts they had sent or open a bank account in the names of the scammers. According to the news website Khaosod, the scammers used pictures of well-to-do Western men including David Cameron as their profile picture when they contacted the women.

The police say they will look into the claims but declined to provide a time frame for the investigation. –
