MP slams call for Penang Road alcohol ban
GEORGE TOWN: Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik has hit back at those calling for a ban on clubs and places of entertainment selling alcohol in Jalan Penang, a popular night spot for locals and tourists.
He said Penang Road, as the place is widely known, is a favourite haunt for tourists and locals. He pointed out that Penang, among others, have been identified as an entertainment spot under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
He said the 2010 ETP report estimated these places can bring in revenue of some RM1.8 billion by 2020 and stressed that tourism and related services played a large part in the Penang economy.
He also questioned the sentiment behind the call, pointing out that patrons at such places were not forced into such outlets.
“Do not impose your values on others, no one is forcing anyone to go there,” he said at a press conference yesterday after banners calling for a demonstration to be held on Saturday were found in various locations.
