PETALING JAYA: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) yesterday announced that two former Universiti Malaya student leaders from the “UM8” group had joined the party.

The two – Fahmi Zainol and Adam Fistival Wilfrid, both 24 – were among eight students punished for inviting former Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a talk at Universiti Malaya in October last year. (However, Anwar was barred from entering the premises.)

Fahmi, an administration and social justice final-year student, said he was invited to join PKR as he believed that change was needed.

“The current (economic and social) situation has made me want to continue tackling issues related to youth and universities,” he told a press conference at the PKR headquarters here.

He will head PKR’s students’ bureau where issues on universities’ budget cuts and student-related matters will be addressed.

Adam Fistival is currently leading an NGO called ‘my changemakers’, which is meant to educate the public on electoral reforms and volunteerism.
