BAGAN DATUK: The operations conducted by the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) of late are proof that the graft-busting agency is “going after the sharks and not the small fry”.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said actions of the commission show its new leadership is committed to eradicating corruption.

“The country’s corruption practices index on the list of international bodies is high, and we want to bring it down. The commission should continue and not compromise,” he said yesterday after attending an event during which the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, declared Bagan Datuk the 12th district in Perak.

“Such action is good for the image of the country and we should not look only into development but also focus on social aspects.

“We hope the ongoing investigations and arrests are not seasonal and isolated but will go on at all times.

“I am confident of MACC’s new leadership under chief commissioner Datuk Dzukifli Ahmad and his deputy Datuk Azam Baki, whose capabilities will reduce the index,” he added.

On the declaration of the new district, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Bagan Datuk MP, said he hopes the overall development in Bagan Datuk will not erode traditions.

“We need to have a balanced development and at the same time, maintain the soul of the place.”
