> Students have benefited from HELP University's 2+1 articulation programme with The University of Queensland

- BY BERNARD CHEAH

HELP University (HELP) is the only university in the world to have a 2+1 articulation programme with The University of Queensland (UQ). In 2016, 74 business students have transferred to UQ, out of which 15 students were awarded scholarships.

One of HELP’s most distinguished alumni, Dr Kelvin Tan Jui Keng, recently wrote back to share some exciting news about his progress as an academic at the world-ranked University of Queensland.

Kelvin was promoted to senior lecturer in Finance at the UQ Business School and was awarded the 2016 Early Career Researcher Excellence in Research Award by the UQ Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.

He completed his Diploma in Business with Distinction at HELP in 2004, and he then went to UQ to complete his Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) where he graduated with a First Class Honours. He then joined the UQ's Faculty of Business School after completing his PhD.

His work has been published in A-ranked academic and practitioner journals, such as the Journal of Corporate Finance. Two of his papers have also been recognised as the Best Papers at both the European Real Estate Society Conference and the 6th Behavioural Finance Conference.

HELP is privileged to have a close relationship with The University of Queensland, which is a member of the Group of 8 Universities (Go8) in Australia, a coalition of leading universities there.

During HELP’s 30th Anniversary Celebration, UQ presented a “30th Anniversary HELP-UQ Bursary” worth AUD10,000 (RM32,800) in honour of Datuk Dr Paul Chan and Datin Chan-Low Kam Yoke, to commemorate the 30 years of excellence and the long-standing relationship between UQ and HELP.

Tiffany Tan Wen Hui was the recipient of this bursary which will help contribute towards her living expenses.

She said she was honoured and privileged to win this bursary, and it was the greatest achievement in her life. Apart from this bursary, she was also awarded a partial scholarship to complete her Bachelor of Commerce programme at UQ.

Recently, HELP two scholarship winners Cheong Min and Carmen Chan Sze Ern, who are now studying at UQ together with their course mate Jay Chai Li, won the third prize in the UQ Malaysian Students’ Association Think Tank Competition. They formed a team called C^3 and chose their business case study topic on Food Management, and how mismanagement of food can cause long-term damage to the environment.

The business case competition, Think Tank 2016, was organised by The University of Queensland's Malaysian Students Association (UQMSA) in collaboration with Australia Malaysia Business Council Queensland (AMBCQ), and UQ Idea Hub (a startup pre-incubator which is an initiative by UQ).

The Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accounting at HELP strongly encourages students to take part in numerous accounting, finance, and case competitions.

Students are given close guidance by lecturers, and are encouraged to work in groups and to learn from each other and from their seniors. The skills acquired during the preparation for these competitions are valuable for the students as they will have a competitive edge when they begin their careers.

HELP is renowned for its business, accounting, and finance programmes, and its graduates are well received by many multinational companies. The graduates are able to secure employment within six months of graduation. The Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accounting at HELP is one of the largest business schools in the region, and its Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Honours) degree is recognised by three international professional accounting bodies.

For STPM and UEC graduates who are interested to pursue a business, accounting or finance degree, HELP University provides a 30% waiver on tuition fees for STPM graduates and a 25% waiver on tuition fees for UEC graduates. HELP also provides various scholarships to outstanding students who have displayed excellent leadership and academic results.

HELP University’s business programmes are offered in the Subang 2 campus, as well as in the Damansara Heights campus.
