PUTRAJAYA: The secretarygeneral of a ministry and his son, who were picked up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) early this month, were released on bail yesterday.

The 59-year-old civil servant was released on RM200,000 bail, while his 34-year-old son was released on RM25,000 bail.

The release order was issued by magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman at Putrajaya magistrate’s court yesterday.

Both father and son were arrested by the MACC for alleged graft on Jan 4, together with another son. They were initially remanded for seven days.

Last week, one of the sons was released on RM10,000 bail.

The secretary-general and the other son had their remand extended by four days to facilitate investigations into the alleged corruption and abuse of power. The three were held under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009, Section 165 of the Penal Code, and AntiMoney Laundering Act.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed that they were released.

A source from MACC said investigations into the case are still ongoing and, if necessary, the three will be called back to facilitate investigations.

“The MACC has recorded some 20 statements from individuals pertaining to the case. They consist of owners of companies believed to have been given projects by the secretary-general,” the source said.

MACC officers will also be going to the ministry’s office today to look into multiple documents involving projects under the ministry.

“The MACC is also investigating a few plots of land in Selangor which involve the suspects.”

MACC had seized RM550,000 in cash, gold nuggets, 150 designer handbags, branded watches and foreign currencies worth RM3 million from the secretary-general’s residence in USJ, Subang Jaya.

He was suspected of abusing his post in the ministry by accepting bribes.
