> Sunway Malls’ Lunar New Year launch heralds a new era for the retail group
SUNWAY MALLS recently launched its group Year of the Rooster celebration with much pomp and grandeur at the brand-new Sunway Velocity Mall.
Present at the launch were Sunway Shopping Malls and Theme Parks CEO H.C. Chan, Sunway Malls chief operating officer Kevin Tan, Sunway Giza Mall centre manager Albert Cheok, Sunway Putra Mall general manager Phang Sau Lian and Sunway Velocity Mall general manager Danny Lee.
While it’s the first Lunar New Year celebration for the month-old Sunway Velocity shopping centre, the event marked a big milestone for the group.
According to Chan, this moment marked the group’s development into a multi-mall operation after some 20 years of growth.
“When Sunway Pyramid was opened back in 1997, it was during the Asian financial crisis,” Chan said.
“Through perseverance, hard work, and dedication, the mall made steady progress and two decades later, here we are, opening our fifth mall, Sunway Velocity.”
Although all five malls will be celebrating the festive season as one, shoppers will find that each mall has its own theme and decorations.
Sunway Velocity Mall is adorned with colourful paper fans of different sizes, which are painted with traditional Chinese motifs.
The decor symbolises the ‘fanning’ of prosperity and fortune to the surrounding area of Cheras.
The God of Fortune will also be spreading some of this prosperity to visitors every weekend, giving out ang pows and surprise gifts to shoppers.
Look out for the Golden Rooster ticket in the red packets, which entitles shoppers the chance to win SK Jewellery’s 999 Pure Gold Tsum Tsum Prosperity Coin Angpow.
Meanwhile, Sunway Pyramid has transformed itself into the streets of Hong Kong in the 1970s.
Based on the theme ‘Mai Zao Gai’ – a popular Cantonese phrase that translates to ‘do not let great bargains or opportunities run away’ from you – the LG2 Orange Concourse now sports a decorative four-storey-high old-school structure of multi-level retail stores and a theatre.
This quaint structure allows for plenty of photo opportunities. Also, catch the mall’s friendly mascot, Leo, dressed in his new Fortune Rooster outfit giving out exclusive discounts at participating stores. At Sunway Putra Mall, it has gone for the festive theme, ‘The Splendour of Spring’, with the decor resembling the ancient charm of Shanghai town. There are old-fashioned shophouses and a theatre stage inspired by the East-meets-West era of the 30s as well as a wishing tree standing amidst a springtime abundance. Try and catch the God of Prosperity and the Shanghai Lady on weekends as they take turns distributing goodies.
Throughout this festive period, shoppers will enjoy two hours of free parking with any amount spent at the mall.
Sunway Giza is also not missing out on the fun as it’s all abuzz with weekend bazaars and a Lunar New Year fair.
Among the activities to enjoy at Giza include a calligraphy contest, a greeting card-making contest, the God of Prosperity Walkabout, and lion dance performances.
Up in Penang, Sunway Carnival Mall is pulling out all stops with the number of auspicious ornaments to go with its theme of ‘Jin Yu Man Tang’, which means ‘may the fortune be with you’.
There are traditional Chinese architectural arches, lime trees, red lanterns, gold coins, and a God of Prosperity sitting majestically at the heart of the concourse.
Shoppers who spend RM300 (RM200 for HSBC cardholders) in two receipts can redeem a packet of the malls’ all season prosperity ang pows.
Those who spend RM700 (RM600 for HSBC cardholders) in three receipts can redeem a Fortune Rooster plush toy.
Shoppers who spend more than RM3,000 (RM2,800 for HSBC cardholders) in five receipts at Sunway Velocity Mall will receive a limited edition Winds of Prosperity 999 Pure Gold Coin.
Shoppers who spend RM1,800 (RM1,600 for HSBC cardholders and Sunway Pals Members) in five receipts at Sunway Putra Mall can redeem an exquisite gold pendant.
Not forgetting the less fortunate at this auspicious time, Sunway Malls has pledged to give away festive packs of some 15,000 items such as toiletries, towels, bags, firstaid kits, non-perishable foods and more to various old folk’s homes.
Each time a shopper redeem ang pow packets and Fortune Roosters after shopping at Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Putra Mall and Sunway Velocity Mall, one donated item will be added to the gift pack.
