SUBANG JAYA: M Xpress Sdn Bhd yesterday signed partnership agreements with SkyNet Worldwide Express and package locker company BOXiT Holdings Sdn Bhd as part of its efforts to increase its market share in an industry dominated by major players such as Pos Laju and Federal Express (FedEx).

M Xpress, the rebranded courier service unit under Sure-Reach Group, said it is ready to be among the key dominant players and capture a significant market share in the industry.

The news comes as Pos Malaysia Bhd announced that it is seeking a tie-up with China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd to provide direct logistics services for e-commerce shipments.

M Xpress expects the partnerships with SkyNet and BOXiT to strengthen its network and connection in the country as well as internationally.

With the agreement with SkyNet, M Xpress now services over 1,000 cities in more than 200 countries, while its partnership with BOXiT will allow its clients to collect their packages at selected 7-Eleven stores.

“Hopefully, after we start these partnerships, within the next one year we can take some sort of market share,” M Xpress group managing director Peter Chan said after the signing ceremony.

“If we can capture 1% to 3% more of the market share within the next one to two years, we will be quite happy,” he added.

Established in 2003, M Xpress currently operates throughout the country with a reach of over 60 stations, 600 staff and a fleet of over 200 vehicles.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari, who witnessed the signing, said local postal and delivery companies need to be more competitive, market-oriented and customer-driven.

“With more and more people buying through the internet, price is no longer the only determinant of success: speed, quality and responsiveness are the next source of competitive advantage for the industry,” he added.

Jailani said the country’s postal and delivery sector targets handling one billion packages yearly by 2025, from 200 million packages currently, driven by rapid development of online shopping businesses.

To date, he said, there are more than 100 local postal and delivery companies licensed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
