More flood evacuees return home

JOHOR BARU: The flood situation in Johor improved over the weekend, with only 1,473 people still seeking temporary shelter at 22 evacuation centres yesterday, especially those in Segamat.

Floods have receded in Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat, Johor Baru, Pontian and Mersing.

State disaster management chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said they were well prepared for the floods.

He said moral support also came from the Sultan of Johor and his consort, Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, who visited several relief centres.

He said the “Johor Muafakat” spirit has even drawn some nongovernm­ental organisati­ons to render help to victims.

Besides the 1,473 evacuees, the Muar district housed 383 victims from 114 families in four relief centres, and Tangkak district had 25 victims from six families at one relief centre.

In the Segamat district, two men died due to floods – Mohd Faiz Syafiq Hassan, 21, and Tarmin Katimah, 58.

Bernama reported that the situation in flood-hit Sabak Bernam in Selangor continued to improve, with only five people remaining at a relief centre as of 9pm yesterday.

A Sabak Bernam District Disaster operations room spokesman said the victims, from two families, were placed at Dewan Sri Bernam in Sungai Besar.

Two relief centres in the district were closed at 2pm, namely Dewan Parit Baru, Sungai Air Tawar, and Dewan Seri Nakhoda, Bagan Nakhoda Omar, and all victims were allowed to return home.

Three flood evacuees returned home from a relief centre in the Hilir Perak district, thus reducing to 433 the number of evacuees in Perak at noon yesterday. The trio had been at SK Changkat Jong Batu 8.

The centre now has 97 evacuees. Another 97 are at SK Sungai Kerawai, according to a portal of the Social Welfare Department.

Manjung still has 218 evacuees, with 208 staying at Sekolah Rendah Agama Rakyat, Padang Serai, and 10 at the Kampung Tanjung Ara community hall.

The Larut, Matang and Selama district had 21 evacuees staying at the Padang Serai Dalam surau.

The number of flood victims at evacuation centres in Pahang at noon yesterday dropped to 5,455 people (1,461 families), from 5,595 people (1,503 families) in the morning.

The number of flood victims in Pahang dropped slightly to 4,344 from 1,154 families last night compared with 4,348 from 1,156 families at 5pm.

The highest number of flood victims at relief centres were from Temerloh (1,687), followed by Pekan (1,089), Maran (1,064), Bera (466) and Rompin (38).

A total of 69 flood relief centres are still open in the state.
